Shortcut tricks can also be used to solve different ways of Letter arrangement questions. In this type of questions, we have to find the number of pairs existing in a given word that has as many letters between them as those in the English alphabet. Let us try some examples.

Illustration:  How many pairs of letters are there in the word REGIMENTATION, each of which has as many letters between them as they have between them in the English alphabet?

A. 0                  B.  1                         C. 2                      D. 3

Answer : D

Solution : The pair are EO, ON, and AG. In the above table, if in any column the extreme letter repeats in any row, then that letter forms a pair with the first letter of the row. If the repeated letter is above the given word (here REGIMENTATION), then the first letter is the rightmost one and vice versa.

Here, the letter G occurs between the 2 extreme letters G, hence, AG is one pair. The letter O repeats between the 2 extreme letters O, hence, NO forms another pair. If the repeated letter is below the given word (here REGIMENTATION), then the first letter is the leftmost one and vice versa. Similarly, the letter O occurs between the 2 extreme letters O, hence EO is one pair.

Thus, pairs are EO, ON and AG and thus answer is (4)

Illustration : How many such pairs of letters are there in the word 'CORPORATE', which have as many letters between them in the word as there are, in the English alphabet between the same letters in sequence?

A. None                              B. One                              C. Two                      D. Three

Answer : D

Solution: There are Four pairs - (P, R), (R, T), (P,T) and (P, O) in the word CORPORATE as they have as many letters between them in the word as in the English alphabet. But since the letters must be in the same sequence in the word as in English alphabet, so that the desired pairs are (P, R), (R, T) and (P,T) only. Thus, answer is 3 Pairs.

Illustration : - How many such pairs of letters are there in the word INSTRUCTION which have as many letters between then in the word as in the English alphabet ?

(a) One                    (b) Two              (c) Three          (d) Four           (e) None of these

Answer : - (D)

As depicted above, C and I have five letters between them in the given word as well as in English alphabet; N and T again have five letters between them and each of the pairs (S and T) and (N and O) have no letter between them. Thus, there are four such pairs. Hence, the answer is (d).
